                Sign up for Medicare Supplement, Medicare Advantage,or Keep Employers Group Health Insurance if still working.

Three basic types of seniors signing up:

1. Turning 65 but not receiving Social Security or Railroad Board Benefits

  • Apply for Medicare Card (Part A and Part B) between 3 months before and 3 months after turning 65
  • Call for Social Security benefits 800-772-1213
  • Rail Road Workers Should call 877-772-5772
  • Sign up for Medicare supplement or Medicare Advantage
  • Sign  up for Medicare Part D (Drug Plan) 60 days before turning 65

2. Turning 65 and receiving Social Security or Railroad Board Benefits (BRB)

  • Most Seniors have a Medicare Card with Part A and Part B
  • Sign up  for Medicare supplement or Medicare Advantage
  • Sign  up for Medicare Part D (Drug Plan) 60 days before turning 65

3. After 65 and already have some type of medicare coverage

  • Definitely have a Medicare Card with Part A and Part B
  • Call Medicare 800-633-4227 (24 hours)  to verify vital questions.
  • Change/Enroll for Medicare Supplement
  • Change/Enroll for Medicare Advantage or Medicare Part D (drug coverage) once a year between Oct. 15 to December 7

Other Facts for Change or Signing up:

  • All Medicare Supplement plans are standardized – same plans regardless what company you choose… Difference is only price! Plan F is Plan F in any insurance carrier.
  • Keep same doctor hospitals of your choice if you switch to a Medicare Supplement
  • You cannot decline Part A (hospital coverage)
  • Part A  generally doesn’t have a premium
  • As of 2016 Part B (medical coverage) has a $121.80 premium/monthly for most people and yearly deductible of $166.00
  • Part C  also called medicare advantage
  • Part D also called RX Drug plan
  • You can opt not to take part B if you are still working
